| On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008, members of the Kegel’s team traveled to Holtwood, Pennsylvania to tour and visit Steve Groff and his Cedar Meadow farm. Located a few miles from the Susquehanna River, Cedar Meadow Farm covers approximately 200 acres. Because of its location so close to the river, some of the property includes very hilly terrain. Due to the lay of the land and the way rainwater will wash soil, tilling the property would result in heavy erosion. Steve therefore implies what he calls a “permanent cover cropping system,” which allows him to reduce soil from washing away, while limiting the use of pesticides. Steve says that due to this, some of his fields have not been plowed for over 20 years.

Steve’s products include white and yellow sweet corn, numerous varieties of winter squashes, pumpkins and tomatoes; most of which are grown in his high-tunnels. We will have heirloom, pear, cherry, yellow and local tomatoes from Cedar Meadow this summer.
